This week has seen the Condé Nast Traveler magazine make their annual award announcements and declare the results of their readers’ choice ‘top 25 cities in the world’ list. Gathering over 1.3 million votes, their list is both original and, at times, surprising, with a number of prominent capitals missing out on top rankings. While the list is somewhat Eurocentric, a surprise entry at number one will keep anyone from making criticism of continental bias.
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (1st) San Miguel de Allende is notable for its near complete lack of street lights and advertising boards, lending it an air of other-timeliness that keeps entranced visitors returning time and time again. Located in central Mexico, this provincial city can expect a great many more visitors in the near future thanks to this high placing
Florence, Italy & Budapest, Hungary (2nd) Caught in another tie, these two cities highlight just how much Europe has to offer when it comes to urban destinations. The incredible Renaissance city of Florence is one of the prettiest in Italy, its nearby vantage points boasting fantastic views over an incredibly well maintained cityscape. In contrast, Budapest appears to be striding purposefully into the future and boasts one of the most exciting and interesting arts and nightlife scenes in Europe.
Salzburg, Austria (3rd) If you’re looking for a destination that combines incredible history with ornate beauty, Salzburg is the perfect city. Whether you’re crossing the Salzach River or looking down on the city from the imposing Hohensalzburg fortress, you cannot fail to be amazed.
Charleston, USA & San Sebastián, Spain (4th) Drawing in fourth position is the highest ranking American city and the beautiful Basque country city of San Sebastián. While Charleston has been the most popular choice in the USA for five years running now, the Spanish city has shot up the rankings thanks to its beautiful scenery and exquisite food.
If you are heading to one of the top 25 destinations, it is important to organise travel insurance before you go, to ensure you have cover during your trip.
