Winter holidays are increasingly popular among Brits, and some destinations are renowned for their winter sun.
Given that nearly nine in ten Brits went on holiday in 2019 according to ABTA, the trend for jetting off around the world is just as popular in the early part of 2020.
According to ABTA members, the Canary Islands top the pile of most loved destinations as strong booking habits were recorded for Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.
The weather is a key driver for this, as temperature highs of 17°C to 20°C are significantly better than the cold and rain seen in the UK!
Other popular winter destinations include Dubai and Egypt, both synonymous with warmer weather, as well as parts of southern Turkey including Antalya and Dalaman.
The latter is renowned for its golden beaches and crystal clear waters, while the resorts are also quieter out of season – ideal for those looking for a relaxing break.
Looking further afield, other popular destinations include the USA, South Africa, Mexico and the Caribbean, with Barbados, St Lucia and Jamaica all featuring on the majority of cruise itineraries.
The report from ABTA revealed that 44% of people have either already taken a winter break, or have one planned for the coming months.
Of the holidays taken, package deals account for roughly half of them, with perceived value for money the main driving factor.
Others are turning to city breaks to Europe and are taking advantage of cheaper flights and deals in February.
Those booking winter trips also need to remember to have adequate travel insurance in place, and to consider things like car hire, as that is also cheaper when booked in advance.
Car hire excess insurance, for example, provides cover for the excess fee you would need to pay should a hire vehicle be damaged – and it costs significantly less when purchased online than it does at the car hire desk!
Note that while you would need to pay the excess in the event of a claim, it could then be claimed back using your car hire excess insurance policy.
