Mexico’s San Jose Del Cabo has been named as the top trending destination in the world for 2017 in the Travellers’ Choice awards for Destinations on the Rise by TripAdvisor.
The travel planning and booking site named San Jose del Cabo as the number one destination due to its 18th century Spanish colonial buildings and stunning beaches.
The relaxed area is located on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula and offers travellers the opportunity to enjoy private beaches or take in the culture of a local town.
The Americas boasted four of the top five spots at this year's awards, with San Jose del Cabo tying for first place with Whistler in Canada, and Jericoacoara in Brazil.
Award-winners were determined by measuring the yearly increase in positive traveller ratings for accommodation, restaurants and attractions and booking interest for destinations worldwide that were posted on the site.
It is the second year running that a South American country has topped the Destinations on the Rise list, with Tulum – located on Mexico’s Caribbean coast – named last year’s winner.
Kihei, Hawaii, was named in fourth place due to its impressive selection of hotels and restaurants, as well as its sandy beaches.
In fifth was Baku – the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan – which is highly regarded for its picturesque scenery and hot weather.
“The results of this year’s awards show it’s the Americas that are particularly piquing traveller curiosity for 2017,” said TripAdvisor spokesperson, Hayley Coleman.
The success of the American destinations shows that there are lesser known destinations in the region that are seeing an increase in popularity and booking interest and that are now opening up for exploration.
El Nido in the Philippines; Eliat in Israel; Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain; and Jodhpur in India; made up the rest of the top ten.
