Twenty five million Britons are opting to stay put and holiday in the UK over a trip abroad, according to a new survey from VoucherCodes.co.uk.
The amount of people now deciding to holiday at home has risen by 4.5 million (7%) from figures recorded last year.
The survey also revealed that the average UK holidaymaker is expected to spend £686 on their break at home, a 55% increase on last year’s figure of £442.
Cornwall has made it to the number one spot for those who are planning a ‘staycation’ for the fifth time in a row, with 12% of those planning on staying in the UK selecting it as their chosen destination.
London managed to maintain its spot as the second most attractive destination, with 9% planning a break to the capital this year, while 8% have plans to take in the fresh air and scenery of the Lake District.
A big factor for the surge in the amount of staycations is finance, with 18% of those surveyed saying they were not travelling abroad this year because of the cost.
Additionally, 16% claim they have decided to vacation at home because they believe it offers better value for money than venturing abroad. However, 30% are opting to holiday in the UK because they have an interest in exploring what the UK has to offer.
Claire Davenport, Managing Director at VoucherCodes.co.uk, believes it is fantastic news to see such a bright future ahead for the local tourism industry, especially considering London was voted the top destination for holiday goers in Europe.
Ms Davenport expects to see a welcome increase across the country for B&B’s, travel retailers and hoteliers during the summer, and also suggested that those in the industry should target their marketing campaigns in order to successfully tap into the consumer trend.
If you’re thinking of travelling abroad this year, be sure to organise your family travel insurance in advance.
