Qantas passengers on selected flights will get the opportunity to transport themselves to another world in more ways than one, thanks to the airline's trial of new virtual reality equipment.
Using Samsung's virtual reality (VR) technology, Qantas’ VR headsets will offer an immersive 3-D experience, offering a 360 view of the airline's network of destinations; as well as showcasing new Qantas products and the latest inflight blockbuster movies.
Running for 3-months, the trial will make headsets available to customers in Sydney and Melbourne International First Lounges from mid-February in addition to First Class cabins on select A380 services from mid-March.
Commenting on the move, Qantas Group Executive, Brand, Marketing & Corporate Affairs Olivia Wirth said:
“Whether the user wants a virtual tour of our new Los Angeles First Lounge or experience an A380 landing from the tarmac, this technology gives us a completely new way to connect with our customers.
“From an inflight entertainment perspective, it’s an industry first. Qantas is committed to being at the forefront of innovation to give our passengers the very best and latest in-flight experiences, like accessing the virtual worlds of their favourite Hollywood blockbusters from the comfort of their seat 40,000 feet above the ground.”
The Northern Territory’s Chief Minister and Minister for Tourism, Adam Giles, added:
“This innovation literally adds a new dimension to how visitors experience Kakadu [home to Australia's largest terrestrial national park.”
Other recent announcements from Qantas include the airline's return to Vancouver after the success of its first season in the December-January travel period.
Qantas Executive Manager International Sales, Stephen Thompson, said:
“Our direct Vancouver services proved really popular so we’re pleased to expand them this year, offering customers more flights on more days over winter and summer, and delivering another boost for inbound tourism for Australia.”
