With the charm of cities on the continent just a hop and skip away, it's no wonder that key destinations in Europe prove to be a firm favourite with UK travellers time and time again.
Now holidaymakers have the chance to cast their vote and decide which European city offers the ultimate holiday experience, with public votes for the European Best Destination 2015 accolade open until February 10th.
20 European destinations have made it into the coveted awards shortlist, with destinations including Innsbruck, Madrid, Riga, Zagreb and more all making it onto the list.
Organised by European Best Destinations (EBD) - a travel organisation based in Brussels and developed to promote culture and tourism in Europe - the awards are now in their sixth year.
Commenting on Valetta's place in the top 20, Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) CEO Mr Paul Bugeja said:
“The nomination of Valletta as European Best Destination is a great honour for Malta, in particular for our great capital, which has already been declared as the European Capital of Culture for 2018.
It is truly a unique city within an Island that can provide something for everyone, from culture to leisure, from history to prehistory, from meetings to reunions, from weddings to special events - and this all year round.”
An independent study revealed that last year's winner - the city of Porto in Portugal - benefitted from continent-wide publicity of more than 10 million Euros as a result of scooping the award.
Travellers who are keen to cast their vote can do so by visiting www.ebd2015.com.
Other European destinations to watch in 2015 include those featured as part of Lonely Planet's top 10 cities for 2015. These are as follows:
3. Milan, Italy
4. Zermatt, Switzerland
5. Valletta, Malta
6. Plovdiv, Bulgaria
7. Salisbury, UK
8. Vienna, Austria
Wherever you are jetting off to on holiday in 2015, it's important to organise travel insurance in advance.
