The winter cold has only just started to set in, but instead of this dip in temperature inspiring Brits to bunker down for the season, it seems it has had the opposite effect.
According to the latest figures from the leading association of travel agents and tour operators; ABTA, more than 12 million Brits are set to pack their bags in readiness for a winter holiday in the coming months - with a spot of winter sun (43%) proving to be the most popular holiday option.
City breaks are also ticking the boxes for more than a third (35%) of travellers this winter, while the lure of the slopes on a skiing/snowboarding holiday is also proving irresistible for 18% of UK holidaymakers.
The Canary Islands, Tunisia, Morocco, Antigua, The Maldives, Mexico and Thailand all sit among the list of the most popular winter sun destinations. When it comes to city breaks; Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris and Vienna are ideal locations for combining the delights of a European getaway with the chance to load up festive season baskets at an array of Christmas markets.
For a snow-filled holiday to remember it seems that resorts in; France, Italy and Austria are always fail safe options for seasoned winter sports enthusiasts. Whilst emerging ski destinations in Poland, Slovenia and Bulgaria are also capturing travellers' attention.
Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive said:
“During the winter months, an incredible range of holidays are available to British holidaymakers so it’s no wonder that so many people will choose to take advantage of this and plan a winter break. We’ve seen a small increase in the number of people taking three or more holidays a year and it looks like lots of these people will be heading away this winter.”
