Completely switching off from our day-to-day lives is a top priority for many holidaymakers. However, the range of gadgetry we take with us on our so-called breaks means that we often remain plugged in to work emails, social media and more.Now UK travellers have decided that instead of pressing the pause button on their social media updates when on their dream getaway, they are going to embrace social media to make that holiday feeling last even longer.
This is according to research by adventure travel company The Flash Pack, which found that the vast majority (84%) of the travellers questioned use social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to draw out the effects of their annual holiday.Almost half of Brits revealed that their Statuscation begins the moment they make their booking, with photos of the tickets making their way to Facebook updates the moment they arrive.
More than a third (34.6%) of travellers also upload photos of the airport departure board, the runway and even the view from their windows when onboard a flight.Commenting on the research, Flash Pack co-founder Lee Thompson, said: “For me holidays have always been about pushing the boundaries and experiencing something that you usually can only dream off – and so The Flash Pack was born. I saw for myself the power of social media when my Rio selfie went viral, and just because you're no longer on that Vespa zipping through the Spanish mountains it doesn't mean your holiday has to be over. Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are great ways to inspire others to bite the bullet and go on their own adventure trip. Long live the Statuscation .”
Further figures from the research show that more than a third (37%) of Brits have extended their holiday experience for a month post-holiday using the power of social media, sharing pics and holiday memories with those online.
Commenting on the phenomenon, UK life coach, Fiona Harrold: “People have their issues with social media and the way it interrupts all aspects of our lives, but here it's a great force for good. Why should the positive and beneficial effects of our trips abroad evaporate as soon as we touch down? This new breed of 'statuscationers' have found a superb, efficient and cheap way to keep that positivity going through, almost to the next holiday”.
