Nothing is more frustrating in our attempts to create a budget-friendly break then being hit with sky high mobile data roaming charges the minute we want to call home or surf the net.
Those travelling to the continent this summer, however, have cause to celebrate on this front as the European Commission (EC) has announced that it is slashing mobile data roaming price caps from 1 July. This means that in just under a week’s time travellers can enjoy mobile data roaming price caps that are more than 50% cheaper than last summer!
Vice President of the European Commission, @NeelieKroesEU, responsible for the Digital Agenda said: "This huge drop in data roaming prices will make a big difference to all of us this summer. But it is not enough. Why should we have roaming charges at all in a single market? By the end of this year I hope we see the complete end of roaming charges agreed – the Parliament has done their part, now it is up to Member States to seal the deal!".
Since the EU started taking mobile roaming charges in hand in 2007 they have fallen by a massive 80 to 90%. World Cup fans are likely to welcome the news with open arms, as they tune into watch matches on the go on their range of mobile devices.
Some of the activities fans of the beautiful game can enjoy for less are: Download 1 World Cup app (+/- 30 MB) - €6 July 2014, compared to €13.50 in June 2014 (-€7.50), Watch the best goals' video on YouTube of 10 minutes every day (+/-5 MB per video, total 35 MB) - €7 July 2014, compared to €15.75 in June 2014 (-€8.75)
If you are heading off to the continent on holiday, it is important to organise European travel insurance in advance.
