What better way is there to see a city than through locals’ eyes? While staying on the well trodden tourist path will ensure that you tick off your list of ‘must see’ sights, being guided round by a local will ensure that you get a glimpse of those charming cafes and quirky bars that will give you an authentic taste of your destination.
Intrepid travellers heading to the city-state of Hong Kong for their break abroad will welcome the news that the Hong Kong Tourism Board has introduced a free-of-charge, 'Hong Kong Pals' programme. The programme will give visitors to Asia's World City the chance to connect with a local Hong Kong Pals volunteer who will share their passion and enthusiasm for the city they call home.
The specially selected group of Hong Kong Pals will allow visitors to get to know the city from the inside out offering them insider knowledge, personal recommendations and tips that will help them scratch beneath the surface of this exciting destination.
Commenting on the programme, Dawn Page, Director, UK & Northern Europe for Hong Kong Tourism Board, said; “The Hong Kong Pals Programme enables visitors to discover the hidden gems which are off the guidebook radar that most people miss, no one knows Hong Kong like those who call it home! We are pleased to offer this programme completely free of charge and strongly encourage visitors to make a 'Hong Kong Pal' and delve deeper into Asia's World City!”
Visitors can book a meeting with a Hong Kong Pal online and meet them at the Hong Kong Tourism Board Visitor Centres in Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon) or at the Peak (Hong Kong Island). They can then create a customised itinerary for exploring the city with their Pal, many of whom have specialist interests. This could include anything from local foodies to photography buffs.
Hong Kong recently took the top spot in Euromonitor International’s Top City Destinations Ranking, proving just how popular the city-state is amongst tourists. If you are heading abroad on holiday, it is important to organise worldwide travel insurance in advance.
