Passengers on KLM flights can now use their mobiles at 30,000 ft on selected Air France - KLM flights. Thanks to AeroMobile, the leading flight phone operator, passengers can now send messages, check emails and even browse the net on their phones while in flight. The service came into action on 29 May.
The limited service will initially be on two flights: the KLM flight from Amsterdam to Panama and the Air France flight from Paris to New York. Both flights are taking place on Boeing B777-300 aircraft.
Passengers will be able to use their phones in this limited capacity, providing their operator has a roaming agreement with AeroMobile. This will allow them to use their phones just as if they were on a roaming tariff abroad. AeroMobile has an extensive network in 100 countries working with over 220 mobile phone operators. This includes Orange, Vodafone and UK based partners O2, Three and Vodafone. Users will be billed by their operator and prices will vary according to the contract they already have in place.
Kevin Rogers, the CEO of AeroMobile said: “We're delighted to add Air France-KLM to the list of high-profile airlines already offering the AeroMobile service to their passengers.”
He went on to add: “Since we launched in 2008, over 17 million passengers have connected to AeroMobile inflight and we're seeing huge demand from consumers who want to stay connected, whether it's to keep on top of emails or update a friend or relative by text message. SMS and mobile data are by far the most popular services on European routes.”
This is good news for business travellers looking to stay in touch while they are in the air. However, it’s equally good for those of us who like to know what’s going on all the time. Having this kind of roaming flexibility in flights opens up a whole new world of possibilities. It heralds an age where mobile access while travelling is as flexible and comprehensive as the choice of travel insurance and flight ticket prices.
