For the third year running Australia has been ranked the world’s happiest place to live. According to the Better Life Index compiled by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Australia has come top again thanks in large part to the strength of its economy.
The survey grades more than 30 developed countries according to qualities such as income levels, health, safety and housing. The top five was completed by Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Canada.
According to the OECD, ‘Australia performs exceptionally well in measures of wellbeing, as shown by the fact that it ranks among the top countries in a large number of topics in the Better Life Index’.
With high employment rates and life expectancy, combined with a strong and growing economy, it would seem Australia is a happy place to be right now. Of course, one lucky soul is soon going to be winning their dream job Down Under. In a competition organised by Tourism Australia, people from around the world were encouraged to apply for one of five dream jobs in Australia, including official food tester, with five lucky people being chosen from tens of thousands of entrants. The combination of a dream job in the world’s happiest country sounds like it’s too good to be true but it could be the reality for a few lucky people.
You don’t have to win a competition to enjoy everything Australia has to offer. It is also one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. With 6.2 million arrivals in the last year, it’s obviously not a bad place to go on holiday. It is certainly very popular with us Brits, with 71,000 of us heading there during March 2013. Perhaps the happiness factor has something to do with it.
