Great Camp Site Meals

Family BBQAt Questor Insurance we love the joys of camping but we don’t like to miss out on a decent home cooked meal. When it comes to cooking while on a camping trip there are many options available ranging from the ever so basic Hexi stove, traditional camp fire to the more complicated gas powered cooking stove. No matter what your cooking options are you needn’t eat only noodles and soup every night. Take a look below for some of our top simple camping recipes:

Vegetarian Omelettes

Omelettes are quick and easy yet very nutritious, the biggest trick with this one is transporting the eggs without breaking them. There are many ways to transport eggs including purchasing a gadget specifically designed for this or wrapping them in bubble wrap or kitchen roll.

  • 3-4 Eggs are required for each omelette
  • A small amount of grated cheese
  • Tomatoes
  • Olives
  • Red, yellow or green peppers
  • Any other vegetables or cooked meats you would like to add
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt and pepper to season

Step 1: Beat the eggs together

Step 2: Slice the olives and vegetables

Step 3: Add the cheese and vegetables to the beaten eggs and mix well

Step 4: Add a small amount of oil to the frying pan and pour in the omelette mixture

Step 5: Gently fry the mixture until it has begun to firm up

Step 6: Turn the omelette to cook the other side

Step 7: Once the omelette is cooked all the way through it is ready to serve

Jacket Potatoes with a topping of your choice

This one takes a little more time but is so rewarding on a cold evening, to make the jacket your own you can top them with cheese, beans, scrambled egg or even ham and salad. Don’t forget you can use sweet potatoes for something a bit fancier.

  • Medium sized potatoes
  • Butter
  • Toppings of your choice

Step 1: Wrap the potatoes tightly in tin foil and bake them on hot coals.

Step2: Wait approximately an hour or so depending on the size of the potatoes

Step 3: Occasionally check the potatoes by stabbing them with a fork, once they are golden brown and fluffy on the inside they are ready to serve.

Step 4: Melt some butter on the potato

Step 5: Finally top the potatoes with toppings of your choice and serve!

The Classic Burger or Hot Dog

A simple yet classic camping dish perfect for the whole family. A meal with minimal preparation time however will keep everyone full for hours. Extra items can be added to this dish to give it extra flavour and colour.

  • Burgers or Sausages
  • Rolls
  • Relish
  • Onions
  • A mix of salad items

Step 1: Prepare a mix of salad for a side dish and to garnish the burger with

Step 2: Chop and fry the onions

Step 3: Fry/ grill the sausages or burgers until they are evenly cooked through.

Step 4: Arrange the sausages or burger in the rolls, topping them with relish, fried onions and salad to garnish.

Italian Meat Balls and a Tomato Sauce

Sit down to a hearty meal of meat balls and pasta to keep your camp family fuelled for their next adventure.

  • Water
  • Pasta
  • Jar of pasta sauce of your choosing
  • Meatballs
  • Grated cheese
  • Oil for frying

Step 4: Add the tomato sauce and bring to the boil

Step 5: Finally serve the pasta and sauce with a sprinkle of grated cheese on top

S’mores aren’t a meal but are the perfect camp fire treat especially with a nice hot mug of chocolate. One of the best things about S’mores is that the ingredients are easy to store and do not easily spoil.

  • Marshmallows
  • A bar of chocolate or Nutella spread
  • Digestive biscuits

Step 1: Take 2 Marshmallows and poke them on to the end of a stick

Step 2: Toast the marshmallows over an open fire until they are golden brown

Step 3: Place one Digestive biscuit at the bottom of the marshmallows
