In a recent report from ABTA, the British travel association found that one in five people will travel out of their home country without any travel insurance, and a third of those people are in the 16 to 25 age bracket. Former research conducted by ABTA and the Foreign and Commonwealth office has also highlighted that many travellers can incorrectly assume that they can turn to the UK government for some support if they fall ill while abroad.
Other research has revealed that 30 to 40 percent of backpacking insurance policies sold are purchased within one to three days of the commencement date of traveling, with a further 10 to 15 percent of travellers buying the insurance on the same day of traveling. Booking travel insurance last minute means that travellers are not going to be protected against cancellation. So in hindsight the best thing to do is book your travel insurance well in advance so that you can be fully protected.
