Just under seven million Brits are planning an overnight holiday trip in the UK this weekend, providing a £1.7 billion boost to the economy.
The figures from VisitEngland show a 1.8 million increase on the numbers recorded last year, when 5.1 million adults enjoyed an overnight break during the August Bank Holiday weekend.
VisitEngland has also revealed that 8.9 million Brits are undecided about whether or not to take an overnight trip during the bank holiday.
The spike in travel has also been present in the number of overseas visitors in recent months, with a record 3.5 million visits in June this year.
Overseas visitors spent just over £2 billion in June, which is a 2% increase on the figure recorded in the same month last year.
The huge number in June this year helped take the overall number of overseas visits to the UK between January and June this year to a record-breaking 19.1 million.
VisitBritain director Patricia Yates said: “Tourism is one of Britain’s most valuable export industries and this continued growth its importance as a key driver of economic growth across our nations and regions.”
The interest from overseas visitors is set to carry on during the rest of the year, with the latest flight booking data from ForwardKeys showing that bookings for arrivals into the UK between August and October are up 9% on last year.
Last year saw a record for inbound tourism, with the number of visitors reaching 37.6 million, whilst spending a total of £22.5 billion.
VisitBritain has been appealing to international travellers with its ‘Home of Amazing Moments’ marketing campaign, which aims to highlight unique experiences available in the UK.
Worth £127 billion annually to the UK economy, tourism is responsible for considerable economic growth as well as creating thousands of jobs.
